What would be a good way to properly dispose of an old microwave oven?

My older cousin wanted to know what would be a good way to dispose of his mother's old microwave oven that she uses often to heat up her food. He wanted to put the oven on the roadside, but somebody told him not to because it could potentially have radioactive material. So what can be done about it?
