Why does Denver get more snow than Colorado Springs?

I have chosen this topic for a meteorology project. Denver has a lower elevation than CS, but gets around 18" more snow than CS. Does it have something to do with local Orographic lift? Do storms hit Denver but skirt around CS? I have done research on NOAA and other various climate websites. Based on the data I've collected, I can only conclude that Denver gets more snow than CS because of local geographic factors. Does anyone (a local meteorologist perhaps) have an answer?
