Looking for the name of a children's /young adults book.?

I may be way off here, but it sounds a bit like "Huck Finn", though I don't remember whether they had taken those particular items with them...I do remember that it was an older man and a younger boy. But, some schools banned this book (even though it's a clic), so my thinking may be way off here...
