Why did Nixon release/pardon Lt Wm Calley (My Lai macre) after he'd been court-martialed?

Calley was convicted of murdering scores of unarmed Vietnamese women and children he rounded up in their village of My Lai, but most Americans considered Calley to he a war hero for the macre. Did Nixon also believe this or did he simply looks at the polls?
