Natural Gas Pipeline, Risks of spills?

Natural gas is primarily methane gas (not liquid), which is half as light as air. In the highly unlikely event of a pipeline leak, the gas quickly rises into the atmosphere. Pipeline safety regulations help ensure quality design, operation and maintenance. Pipelines are installed well below ground, and small markers are placed periodically to notify contractors of their presence. The natural gas industry has a superb safety record. Natural gas lines are installed in such a way that they do not affect the scenery, other than keeping the narrow right-of-way above the pipeline free of buildings and trees. Farmers are usually permitted to grow crops above the pipeline.
